Our Commitment to LIMA Training Methods: Humane & Effective Dog Training

When you invite a pet care professional into your home, you deserve to know exactly how they'll treat your dog. At Sileo Pet Services™, we don't take that trust lightly. That's why everything we do — from private training sessions to daily walks and drop-in visits — is grounded in LIMA principles: Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive.

This isn't just a philosophy. It's a professional standard, and it shapes every interaction our team has with your pet.

What Is LIMA?

LIMA stands for Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive. It is a guiding framework used by professional trainers and behavior consultants, and is endorsed by leading organizations including the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT).

In practical terms, LIMA means that a trainer or handler should always use the least invasive, least aversive technique that is still effective in achieving the desired behavioral result. It doesn't mean dogs are never redirected or held to a standard — it means the method used to communicate that standard is always the most humane option available.

The Humane Hierarchy

Closely connected to LIMA is the Humane Hierarchy, which outlines a priority order for how behavior should be addressed:

  1. Health, Nutrition & Physical Wellbeing — Is the dog healthy and comfortable? Pain and illness affect behavior.
  2. Antecedent Arrangement — Can we adjust the environment to prevent the problem before it starts?
  3. Positive Reinforcement (+R) — Rewarding desired behaviors to make them more likely. This is the foundation.
  4. Differential Reinforcement — Rewarding an alternative, incompatible behavior instead of the unwanted one.
  5. Negative Punishment (-P) — Removing something the dog wants to reduce an unwanted behavior (e.g., withdrawing attention when a dog jumps).
  6. Negative Reinforcement (-R) — Used carefully and sparingly within LIMA context.
  7. Positive Punishment (+P) — Adding an aversive stimulus to suppress behavior. Considered only as an absolute last resort after all humane options have been exhausted.

Our team works from the top of this hierarchy down — always defaulting to the most benign, least stressful approach first.

Why LIMA Matters for Your Dog

It Builds Trust, Not Fear

Aversive training methods may suppress an unwanted behavior in the short term, but they do so by causing fear, pain, or discomfort. This erodes the trust between dog and handler, and can increase anxiety and aggression over time.

LIMA-based training builds a relationship founded on clarity, consistency, and positive communication. Dogs trained this way want to engage. They're less anxious, more confident, and more responsive.

It Produces Lasting Results

Punishment-based approaches often address the symptom, not the cause. Positive reinforcement and behavior modification through LIMA address the why behind a behavior, leading to more durable and reliable change.

It Respects the Dog as an Individual

Every dog is different. A method that works for one dog may be deeply inappropriate for another. LIMA requires that handlers continually assess each individual animal's emotional state and adjust their approach accordingly.

It Aligns With Modern Behavioral Science

LIMA is grounded in applied behavior analysis (ABA) and decades of scientific research on learning theory. The most respected credentialing bodies in the dog training industry — CCPDT, APDT, IAABC — all support LIMA as the professional standard.

How LIMA Shows Up in Our Work

At Sileo Pet Services, LIMA isn't confined to formal training sessions. It shapes how our entire team operates:

  • Dog walks include reinforcement of foundational cues like sit, wait, and loose leash walking — using the dog's motivation, not corrections.
  • Drop-in visits incorporate gentle reinforcement of household manners and calm behavior.
  • Pack walks are structured around compatibility, controlled environments, and positive group dynamics.
  • Private training begins with a full assessment of the dog's behavior, history, and environment before any plan is developed.
  • All team members are trained under ownership using a shadow model before working independently.

A Word on Aversive Methods

We are transparent: we do not use or condone the use of shock collars used punitively, prong collars as a correction tool, choke chains, alpha rolls, flooding, or physical intimidation. These methods carry significant welfare risks and are not consistent with our values or professional standards.

If you're interviewing pet care or training professionals, asking about their approach to behavior is one of the most important questions you can ask.
